The island of Fuerteventura has a total area of 1,658 km2 and is the flattest island in the archipelago. It forms part of a 200 km long alignment that starts with the islet of Alegranza, to the north of Lanzarote and extends to nearly 20 km south of Punta de Jandía, creating the largest continental platform in the Canaries. The island has extensive plains which are practically unique in the archipelago. Its central axis is a long plain, in contrast to the rest of the islands whose highest peaks are usually found along this axis. Fuerteventura’s relief reflects a state of advanced maturity and although it has been the site of many eruptions throughout its geological history, they have never been enough to compensate for erosion and so the terrain has never been noticeably rebuilt.
